What they say in the commercial is true – about it affecting other people? It can. But that commercial is killing me softly.¬†Stoppit already. There’s realism in it, but it’s probably got depressed people everywhere ready to claw their own eyes out. Know what’s interesting? I notice those commercials more often on Hallmark Channel or Lifetime. Are their demographics such that they think they’re dealing with a depressed audience? I don’t see those ads on Spike TV. Instead it’s Cialis, Viagra and Ultimate Fighting Championships. lol Man stuff! But what’s with the people in the bath tubs in those erectile dysfunction commercials? What exactly is the connection between claw-foot tubs and sex? Hmmm…

Getting Help for Depression

On tha real though, if you are depressed, or think you’re depressed and recognize it, please talk to someone about it. Depression is a serious medical condition. It may be hard to admit but you’ll be better equipped to deal with it if you understand it. Find a friend or someone you can confide in and be real about what you’re feeling. If someone tells you they think you seem depressed, listen. Take it from me: the best thing you can do is admit you’re feeling low and understand that you don’t have to feel that way. As a friend of a depressed person, you can listen, but know that it is not your job to “fix” anyone (unless you’re a trained psychotherapist).

If you’re not big on medication, talk to your doctor or homeopath about alternative therapies. There is research that says there is a link between B vitamins deficiencies and depression. Severe B12 deficiency can result in one type of anemia and anemia can cause depression. Low vitamin D levels can cause depression. There are so many factors but through experimentation, I’ve found two things that work for me when I’m feeling stressed out/down or just not like myself. Sublingual B12 (taken under your tongue) and St. John’s Wort, which is an herbal supplement, both seem to work with my body’s chemistry for positive mood support. I’ve also read that Omega-3s can help too. Ideally, you would get many of these nutrients in your food, but who has a perfect diet?

Lastly, if you recognize the signs of severe or chronic depression – in yourself or in a friend, don’t be ashamed to seek professional help or help them find a counselor – even if they don’t think they need it. And whatever you do, don’t let them watch that Cymbalta commercial. And don’t worry about me jumping… I’m on the ground floor.
